The Ian Coury Trio presents a virtuosic concert that celebrates the richness of Brazilian music in dialogue with contemporary jazz. Led by award-winning Brazilian mandolinist Ian Coury, a virtuoso of the 10-string mandolin and a Master’s graduate from Berklee College of Music, this instrumental trio features Ian’s original compositions as well as classics of the Brazilian repertoire re-imagined by three world-class musicians.
Since he was a nationally recognized prodigy in his native Brazil, Ian has been expanding the possibilities of the 10-string mandolin by exploring new sounds, improvisation, and musical freedom. His work seeks to push beyond the traditional boundaries of the instrument, building bridges between the traditions of Brazilian music and the open, contemporary language of jazz.

Ian Coury
By the age of 12, Ian Coury had already shared the stage with Brazilian choro legends Armandinho and Hamilton de Holanda. Now, at 23, he is recognized as one of Brazil’s foremost virtuosos of the 10-string mandolin, pushing the boundaries of both the instrument and the choro genre. Ian has performed with distinguished musicians such as Paquito D’Rivera, Claudio Roditi, and Toninho Horta, and has earned several prestigious awards, including “Best Instrumentalist” at the National FM Radio Festival (2020) and second place (popular vote) at Brazil’s eFestival (2021) for his original compositions.
A native of Brasília, Ian began playing the mandolin at the age of 8 under the tutelage of Marcelo Lima at the Raphael Rabello School of Choro. His musical journey led him to Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full scholarship, where he received the String Department Award in his final year. He has shared his expertise through workshops at the University of Colorado Boulder (2018), Harvard University (2022), and MIT (2022). Ian has also taught mandolin courses at Choro Camp New England (2022) and CIVEBRA in Brasília (2024), among other institutions. In 2022, he launched the first online Brazilian mandolin course in the U.S., "Brazilian Choro Mandolin," on pegheadnation.com.
Before his studies in the U.S., Ian had already built a distinguished career in Brazil, performing at NAMM in 2017 and 2018. His early accolades include performing solo and with Armandinho at the Clube do Choro in Brasília (2014), being recognized by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Arts, History, and Literature (2014, 2015), appearing on the cover of Choro Magazine (2016), and receiving a culture award from Brazil’s House of Representatives.
Ian continues to perform both in Brazil and internationally, captivating audiences with his technical mastery and innovative approach to the mandolin.
